The course will introduce concepts and techniques related to the science of biophotonics, i.e. how to generate and utilize light (or more precisely, photons) to image, detect and manipulate biological materials. Biophotonics is an emerging field of research that uses light and other forms of radiant energy to understand the inner workings of cells and tissues in living organisms. The approach is used in biology to study and probe for molecular mechanisms, function of proteins, DNA, and neurobiological processes in vivo. 

Biophotonics can also be described as the development and application of optical techniques, particularly imaging, to the study of biological molecules, cells and tissue.
