«Anthropocene and Health» is a doctoral course (worth 2 ECTS, directed by Prof. Antoine Flahault, MD, PhD) delivered at the Spring School of Global Health 2023 by the Institute of Global Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva.
PRIMARY OBJECTIVES
This course will provide a unique opportunity for participants to learn about major issues related to global environmental changes and health today. The main objectives are as follows :
- Become familiar with the fundamentals of One Health and Planetary Health, through examining ecosystem services, planetary boundaries, environmental changes and population growth;
- Examine the impacts of environmental changes on population health, by focusing on specific risks and threats such as antimicrobial resistance and emerging diseases;
- Become aware of the relationship between climate changes and equity as well as look at other vulnerabilities, particularly with regard to non-communicable diseases;
- Explore the interrelationship between public health systems and the environment, specifically between climate changes and humanitarian activities, by looking at the co-benefits and trade-offs between health and the environment;
- Identify challenges and search for solutions in the fields of planning, risk reduction, adaptation and policy implementation.
FORMAT AND PRELIMINARY PROGRAM
Classes will be held from Monday 27th of March to Thursday 30th of March, between 9am and 5pm. There will be a mixture of lectures including a keynote lecture on the Tuesday afternoon and a panel on Wednesday afternoon. Participants will be asked to make a short presentation on the final day. More details will be provided on the first day of the course.
