Thème DE->EN for the 2023 autumn semester, given by Ed Friesen of the English Unit. 

Classes are Thursday morning, 8:15 to 9:45. 

In each class, we take a new German text for translation. We start translating it collaboratively in class, and then completion is left up to the student, as an exercise. Submit your translation to me by Sunday noon to be sure that I can give you individualized feedback before the following class.

We will review the exercise in the next class and discuss the difficulties encountered and possible solutions.

The main aim of this class is to help French-speaking students improve their knowledge and understanding of English language and culture, and to help English-speaking students to improve their knowledge of French language and culture and gain practical experience of translating into English.

Objectif
The main aim of this class is to help French-speaking students improve their knowledge and understanding of English language and culture, and to help English-speaking students to improve their knowledge of French language and culture and gain practical experience of translating into English.

Descriptif
This course is divided into two separate classes, one designed for native speakers of French, the other for native speakers of English.

Students will do practice translations covering a number of different text types and topics. The course will focus on improving students' grammatical accuracy and deepening their knowledge and understanding of the cultural, syntactic and idiomatic differences to be taken into consideration when translating between French and English.

Evaluation
Examen écrit.
Two-hour written exam. The student will translate a 300-word text. Optional seminar work (two-hour written exam).


Traduction IT/EN

BT0287-AU

This course is intended for non-native English speakers. The aim is for you to develop a more creative approach and familiarize yourself with the differences between Italian and English, not only on a grammatical, lexical and syntactic level, but also on a stylistic level. Throughout the semester, you will be asked to :

  • translate a variety of different texts from IT to EN, including tourist texts, literary texts, food writing and ads
  • read similar texts produced in English and identify differences with the Italian texts, in terms of voice and style
  • edit and improve texts translated by non-native English speakers
  • revise and improve your classmates' translations
  • practice your oral skills by debating a variety of different issues
