This course aims to provide students with an in-depth understanding of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and how it operates in practice. Through introductory lectures and case studies, students will engage with both theoretical and practical aspects of IHL, addressing contemporary challenges and developing critical analytical skills.
Issues covered include, inter alia, the classification of armed conflicts as international or non-international and the implications of this distinction; the scope of application of international humanitarian law; the distinction between civilians and combatants, the treatment of persons in the power of the enemy and the rules on the conduct of hostilities; the law of occupation; the relationship between international humanitarian law and human rights; terrorism; targeted killings; and the enforcement of international humanitarian law; the regulation of activities of armed groups, their role in international law-making processes.
