The universe is populated by a large variety of neutral particles, photons and neutrinos, and by charged cosmic rays, that cover at least 18 orders of magnitude in energy. Physicists and astrophysicists study this radiation with detectors on Earth, under the earth and in space to understand their origin. These observations are essential to understand the evolution and the structure of the universe. This course will cover the topic of matter acceleration to the highest energies by the most powerful sources in the universe, such as black holes, gamma-ray bursts and supernova explosions. It will illustrate how this radiation is used to understand the cosmos. Some examples of detectors and of their results will be given. This course illustrates to students the most recent developments in gamma, neutrino and cosmic ray astrophysics.
