The aim of this course is to offer participants an introduction to the political and policy dimensions of multilingualism. Although the issues at hand are eminently political, the course will emphasize the selection, design, implementation and evaluation of policies by states and their surrogates, including international organizations. Language policy and planning (hereafter: LPP) is the term increasingly used to subsume the selection, design, implementation and evaluation of this range of interventions. This course is intended to make students aware of the importance of public policies regarding language and multilingualism, not only as a key influence on the extent of multilingualism that characterizes a given linguistic environment, but also as a major (possibly the single most important) determinant of the demand for translation and interpretation.
