The course is designed to allow participants to discover the field of Education in Emergencies (EiE), a field at the intersection of educational sciences and humanitarian action. Indeed, as mentioned in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 – “Quality Education: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” – education in times of conflict, protracted crises or climate-induced disasters must be preserved. Unfortunately, many contexts are affected by these challenges, which explains why “education in emergencies”, as a field of action and research, is gaining increasing importance within the international community.
This summer school will allow participants to situate this field within humanitarian architecture and within educational sciences; it will provide essential tools to understand its mechanisms and inherent tensions.
Throughout the program, this summer school emphasizes the need for collaboration between humanitarian action and research: students will benefit from a range of lecturers coming from international organizations as well as academic institutions.
The Summer school aims to achieve the following objectives:
- Understand the origins and development of Education in Emergencies
- Explore the field through key concepts and analytical frameworks
- Identify the main challenges addressed by EiE and the insights generated through academic research
The Summer School combines lectures and collaborative group activities to foster both theoretical understanding and practical application. Throughout the week, participants will work on analyzing an emergency situation. Each day's content will provide new insights and tools that students can integrate into their ongoing analysis.
This approach offers participants the opportunity to mobilize theoretical knowledge and transform it into practical resources for understanding and addressing complex educational challenges in emergency contexts.
