Description:
This course will teach students the basics of statistical reasoning, programming, and analysis. It is aimed at helping students develop basic skills and the ability to execute and evaluate simple analyses on continuous (i.e. numerical) data. It will involve practice with coding, visualising and analysing simple data in R. It will cover:
1) Basic concepts in probability (independence, probability distributions, expected value, etc.)
2) Basic concepts in statistics (samples, populations, measures of central tendency, etc.)
3) Types of data (continuous, categorical, etc.)
4) Introduction to programming in R: installation, scripting, data import, export and basic processing steps.
5) Data visualisation.
6) Basic statistical analysis (correlations, linear regressions, etc) with a focus on description and simple hypothesis tests.
Pedagogical objectives:
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1) Competently summarise and visualise datasets.
2) Code a simple analysis in R.
3) Frame a basic hypothesis test, and (more importantly) recognise their limitations in real-world situations.
