A word is a sequence of symbols, called letters, taken from a set called the alphabet. These objects
are related to several fields of mathematics, such as group theory, probabilities, or theoretical
computer science. The goal of this course is to study several aspects of the combinatorics of words.
After an introduction on words and their basic properties, we will cover a selection of topics among
the following:
• asymptotic properties of words
• automata
• formal languages
• patterns within words
• monoids, semigroups and groups
• connections between words and non-commutative algebra
• words and trees
