32E0328 - Seminar - Short Early Modern Poems (Spring) - G. Fulton
This seminar focuses on a wide range of short Early Modern poems, spanning the sonnet, song, elegy, ode, and pastoral. We will examine formal features of Early Modern short poems, such as the conceit, metrical variations, encomiastic language, and the use of classical allusion. After establishing familiarity with the form of Early Modern short poems, we will consider the treatment of key themes which emerge variously and interestingly across the Renaissance. We will consider how genre shapes the expression of such themes by looking, for example, at how the sonnet plays with topics such as love, redemption and confession, or how religious verse subverts doctrinal ideas. By the end of the seminar students should be able to analyse, contextualise and compare features of Early Modern short poems and discuss in detail different types of short poems found in Early Modern England.
