We will make a cursory examination of some basic legal concepts that translators should bear in mind, and explore strategies for approaching legal, regulatory and administrative texts in French. In this module, we will focus on texts dealing with criminal law and criminal procedure, constitutional law, and international labour and human rights law. Miscellaneous theoretical points arising from the material will be presented and discussed in class, always from a linguistic (translation) perspective. Much of our time will be spent developing a formal style of expression in English. This is the first of two sequential modules, which should be completed in the intended order rather than back to front.
