This seminar explores research on international organizations. There is an increasing number of international institutions in this world and there are only few areas in world politics that are not regulated in some way, formally or informally, by an international organization (IO). In the first weeks of the course we ask why states establish international institutions. We then examine how international organizations function when managing headquarter and field relations, crises, knowledge and learning, as well as standard-setting.

Throughout the course we have four senior officials from International Organizations (ILO, OSCE, UNOCHA, IRC) join us for practitioner talks that put the research into perspective. These encounters will be structured around the most pressing issues facing international organizations today.
