Global Migration Governance

Notwithstanding the salient need for common solutions, international migration is not a stronghold of global governance. While states have been keen to safeguard the idea of sovereignty over the intake of non-nationals, in practice, a fragmented set of formal and informal rules is emerging that aims at regulating the mobility of people across borders. Based on an introduction into the various levels and forms of international governance, this seminar will map the evolving patchwork of global migration governance looking at the dimensions of human rights, economic mobility, development, and security (i.e. migration control) in multilateral and regional arrangements in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas .

 Course Requirements: Students are expected to attend the seminar regularly. Apart reading the mandatory readings (on average 2 articles per week) and participate actively (10%), students will be expected to present and critically discuss one mandatory reading (counts 10%); participate in an in-class debate (counts 7.5%) and write an ex-post reflection (essay, counts 7.5%); prepare an oral presentation (counts 20%); and write a seminar paper based on the presentation (max. 3000 words) (counts 45%).

Attendance is mandatory (2 absences maximum). The outline of the oral presentation shall be sent to me at the latest 10 days before the date of the presentation for feed-back.
