General Description
This course is compulsory for all students enrolled in the program "Molecular Biosciences" (BIOMO) of the PhD School of Life Sciences at the Faculties of Medicine and Science. It is taught by PIs participating in the program and several external lecturers. It will cover a wide range of selected topics in biology and biochemistry, in complementary skills, and will also include two compulsory sessions on the ethical conduct of science.
Course organisers: Program directors BIOMO PhD Program Faculty of Science (Robbie Loewith & Patrick Méraldi)
Time and duration: two block sessions of 45h each per semester
Place: various lecture rooms in Sciences 2 & 3, please consult course program for details.
Starting date for students: students can start the class twice a year, either in the Autumn or in the Spring semester (see detailed program for exact dates), and just need to make sure that they complete one full cycle.
Teaching objectives:
- get a sense of the local scientific environment.
- foster critical scientific thinking.
- critical reading and discussion of scientific papers.
- get to know available platforms and services.
- learn about the ethical conduct of science.
- complement scientific knowledge with additional skills.
Teaching format:
- 2 x 2 weeks of interactive teaching and sessions (30 sessions in total).
- Paper discussions (5 sessions): at the end of each block of teaching associated with a particular scientific topic, students will split up into smaller groups (typically 3-5 groups of at most 10 students) for a session of paper discussions. Each group will meet with one of the lecturers of a topic for an interactive session to discuss several papers. Within limits, students will be able to choose their lecturer, but will be expected to read all assigned papers and to be prepared to present and to discuss them.
- Note that attendance is compulsory to obtain the credits. You will be able to record your attendance through the "Attendance" feature of Moodle. For the entire course, you may miss 3 sessions (3 x 3h), provided you announce your absence to the respective lecturer and the course coordinator ahead of time. If you miss more, you will have to catch up the following year.
- The course also constitutes a preparation on general scientific knowledge for the TAC exam at the end of the first year.
