This course will focus on Aristotle’s psychological treatises on dreaming and dreams (On Dreams and On Divination in Sleep). Besides providing one of the most interesting ancient discussions of the activity of dreaming as well as the function of dreams, these treatises are also an important source for understanding Aristotle’s “philosophy of mind”. The course will be in English and in seminar format: it will be based on a careful reading of Aristotle’s text and of relevant secondary literature. Participants will be expected actively to contribute presentations.
