More people than ever before have been forced to flee because of conflict. This seminar focuses on both internally displaced persons and refugees, as well as "trapped" populations. The seminar examines transnational displacement dynamics around the world with a particular focus on Eastern Africa and the Middle East. The aim of the course is not only to explore questions of why and where people flee to, but also of what protection challenges and security risks forced migrants face when arriving in the country of asylum. This includes the discussion and analyses of violent conflict of refugees with state and non-state actors, such as local communities and rebel groups.
