This course is an introduction to major authors, texts, and genres of medieval English literature, from elegiac Old English poems such as Beowulf and The Wanderer to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the anonymous Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Margery Kempe's eponymous Book of Margery Kempe. Students may take the course during either the Autumn semester or the Spring semester. However, students must take the BA4 lecture course Medieval England and the BA4 seminar Reading Medieval Texts during the same semester. In other words, if you take the lecture course in the Autumn semester, you must take the seminar in the Autumn semester as well, and if you take the lecture course in the Spring semester, you must take the seminar in the Spring semester.
The required textbook for the BA4 lecture course and seminar is the Norton Anthology of English Literature, 11th edition (2024), Volume A: The Middle Ages, ed. James Simpson and Julie Orlemanski (ISBN: 9781324062615).
