This seminar focuses on morphology, the branch of linguistics concerned with the structure of words and the principles governing word formation. It introduces key concepts and analytical tools for the analysis of linguistic data from English but also from a range of other languages, enabling students to develop a comparative perspective on morphological systems. Students will investigate processes of word formation and inflection, including both familiar processes found in English and cross-linguistically widespread processes such as reduplication. They will also learn about morphological typology and the interfaces between morphology and other components of grammar, such as phonology. Particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of linguistic data.
