Regional integration understood as the state-led delegation of policies and political authority to regional institutions has become a pervasive feature of the global order. Whereas the European Union represents the most advanced model, processes of regional integration exists on all continents, be it NAFTA, Mercosur or the Pacific Alliance in the Americas; the African Union and Regional Economic Communities in Africa; or ASEAN and the Gulf Cooperation Council in Asia, among others. In this seminar we establish a conceptual framework for comparing the different dimensions of regional integration, elaborate the basic political science theories of regional integration, and apply these conceptual and theoretical tools to understand and comparatively assess the different forms of regional integration in the world.
Course Requirements: Students are expected to read the weekly readings (2 articles per week on average) and participate actively in
class (10%); prepare one short statement/input (max. 10 minutes)
summarizing the main institutional features of a regional integration project
other than the one chosen for your presentation, (10%); conduct an informed in-class debate (10%); prepare an oral presentation (25%); and write a seminar paper based on the presentation
(max. 3000 words) (45%). Attendance is mandatory (2 absences maximum). The outline of the
oral presentation shall be sent to me at the latest 10 days before the date of
the presentation for feed-back.
