This course is interested in the figure of the narrator in a cross-section of Chaucer's works. We will look at many of Chaucer's most interesting narrators and consider how they relate to his poetics more generally. The contruction of the narratorial voice, orality, reception and readers will be kept in mind as we work our way through a selection of dream visions (Book of the Duchess, Parliament of Fowls, Legend of Good Women), excerpts from the Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Criseyde.
