    Course Description
    This interdisciplinary course examines the social, political, commercial and economic determinants of health as a lens on the structural and systemic factors that produce health inequalities. Foregrounding an intersectionality approach to the multiple and intersecting drivers of health inequalities, the course will provoke students to think through innovative policies, practices and interventions that seek to address root causes ranging from global and geopolitical poverty, resource distribution, health system access and the challenges of Universal Health access (UHC) to structural discriminations associated with, for example, race, class, gender, sexuality, ableism, religion, migration and citizenship, indigeneity and colonialism.

    Learning Outcomes
    The course is structured in three parts each with a specific learning objective:
    Part I Foundations to Understanding and Tackling Global Health Inequalities
    Part II Understanding Axes of Health Inequalities
    Part III Emergent issues in health inequality

    Assessment
    Students are evaluated on the following requirements:
    1. Formative assessment of contribution to class discussions, feedback on readings and an in-class group/individual case study presentation and discussion (50%)
    2. Final assignment of 1500 - 2000 words. A policy brief/case study in response to a global health inequality/inequity challenge of choice submitted at the final class on 21st December 2026.

    Course Description

    Disease and ill-health demand responses – mainly although not always from biomedical health systems, public health initiatives and policies around health and safety across all sectors – housing and sanitation, roads and transport, public spaces and places of work. Lay, informal, and complementary health systems can also be included as a part of the wider response to conditions of disease and ill-health. Health systems require resources – human, financial and material – but inequalities in health outcome are manifest in all of these areas from precarious and unsafe working conditions, to unequal access to health insurance and lack of universal health coverage.

Once legally settled and integrated within a health system, migrant health have been typically found to improve from place of origin – although as Marmot famously found – this is by no means always the case (study of Japanese migrants to the USA, or Irish migrants across the world. Between point of departure and point of arrival, migrants face the most health risks and migration health has become a growing pillar of global health policy and practice – whether it be the movement of health care workers , refugees economic migrants or family reunificaton.
