This course has two principal aims. It will introduce MA students to the fundamentals of crafting a research design in political Science. The research design specifies how you are going to carry out a research project and, particularly, how to use empirical evidence to answer your research question. Students will learn about different types of research designs and become aware of the trade-offs involved in choosing a particular design.
This knowledge will help them for the second and most important goal of this course: Drafting your own research design for your Master thesis. Over the course of this course, the students will develop their MA thesis further by focusing on a precise research question, hypotheses and the development of a sound research design that is suitable to answer the research question at hand.
After a first part on introducing different research designs and wrapping-up on how to draft research questions and hypotheses, we will meet to discuss each other’s work and train also to give constructive feedback.
