In an increasingly interconnected world, policy solutions for health are interlinked and complex. Therefore, we will examine in this course the interface of health with other sectors, such as foreign policy, development, migration, and security. The mutual enriching relationship between global health policy, governance, and diplomacy will be explored and an introduction to these concepts provided. Through group presentations and interaction with guest speakers, we will analyze the many actors in global health, the venues for health, and the existing governance mechanisms supporting health policy making on different issue areas. Global health is embedded in political decision-making and global health diplomacy has a pivotal role to play here. It is not only a set of practices used by governments and non-state actors to coordinate and orchestrate global policy solutions with the aim to improve the population health but it is also an instrument of governance for health. A particular emphasis will be given to the role WHO plays as an international health actor.
