This course offers an introduction to literary studies of affect, feeling, and emotion. We will begin with the “affective turn”
in the late 20th century (Eve Sedgwick and Adam Frank, Brian Massumi) and continue through efforts to decolonize the
field (Sneja Gunew, Neetu Khanna). We will puzzle over the difference between affect and emotion, think about the
cultures and politics of feelings, and fail to fully map a field that is increasingly interdisciplinary, diffuse, and diverse in its
methods. We will read early and recent critiques of the field (Claire Hemmings, Tyrone S. Palmer), and we will ask what
is at stake in literary analysis that centers feelings such as happiness (Sara Ahmed), irritation (Sianne Ngai), shame
(Timothy Bewes), and optimism (Lauren Berlant).
All course materials will be available on Moodle
