Until recently, the belief that the role of business is to maximize profit and shareholder value has dominated. The society of the 21st century is in a crisis marked by resource scarcity, deforestation, climate change, social and economic inequality, and poverty, to mention just a few. Looking at this societal and environmental state of our planet, the role of business and capitalism requires rethinking. Business-as-usual is not an option anymore. Organizations need to pause and reflect on the negative societal and environmental impacts of their practices and operations, as well as opportunities for positive impact.
This course examines the transition to a more
responsible, purposeful, and sustainable economy. The course introduces
frameworks, approaches, and best practices on how organizations develop and
implement a business model that has a positive impact on society and the
environment while being profitable. Students will have the opportunity to work
with local organizations and provide recommendations of how these organizations
can improve their societal and environmental impact.
The course is delivered through a mix of
lectures, case studies, and class discussions. The course includes
continuing assessments comprised of a group project and individual semester
assignments.
