This course aims to train the student in theoretical and practical ways to the various themes of biodiversity as a discipline of biological sciences. It is oriented towards the understanding of the processes and mechanisms at the origin of the diversity of organisms. To better understand the theoretical concepts, the student will learn to use bioinformatic tools through practical exercises. Presentations and discussions of articles will complete the teaching.

The skills and competences that should be acquired at the end of this course are to:

know the major changes in biodiversity through geologic time;
explain the processes leading to species formation and lineage diversification;
interpret species distribution data within a historical biogeographic framework;
propose hypotheses that can explain the diversification history of a taxonomic group given a series of observations;
identify the type and amount of data needed to assess the likelihood of a diversification or spatial distribution process;
Identify and use the most appropriate analytical methods or bioinformatics tools for a particular case;
Explain the threats to biodiversity and ways to conserve biodiversity.
