Objectives
We aim at introducing and discussing multiple approaches to the problem of studying the
relationships between bodily, cerebral and psychological processes, as central in Affective Sciences, with both a historical and epistemological perspective. We aim at helping student to understand the complexities of the problem with a research-oriented approach, with focus on conceptual and practical methodological
aspects and debates, including physiology, acquisition and signal processing in connection to instrumentation: real-life, real-lab
constraints. We also emphasize the importance of understanding and modeling organic sources and mechanisms of signal generation:
beyond the superficial layer of recorded signals. We also aim at offering an opportunity to students to practice their English, which is essential for academic careers.
Description
The course will cover the following topics: Biological Autonomy, Integrated Systems, The stress response, The problem of inference, Signal acquisition & processing methods & tools, the role of the body in Emotion and Feeling, :around classical theories: James-Lange versus Cannon-Bard, and Modern versions (Rolls’ arguments against James-Lange hypothesis
and Damasio’s synthesis), The subjective body and its methodological challenges, with an evolutionary perspective, and a focus on bodily illusions, Virtual Reality as a method for studying bodily self-awareness, The objective body and its representations, with an introduction to physico-chemistry, the concept of autopoiesis, a precis of functional anatomy (peripheral nervous system, musculoskelettal and somatic nervous system. visceral systems and autonomic nervous system, and central nervous system), The objective body and its magnifying devices or instrumentations, introducing electromagnetism, physiological measurments (from peripheral to central nervous systems, and organs), A precis on the lesion methods and examples of pharmacological approaches, Examples of: combination of brain electrophysiology (MEG/EEG) with peripheral psychophysiological measurements, and combination of brain imaging (fMRI) with peripheral psychophysiological measurements, to study
brain and body interactions in emotions and interoceptive awareness.
