During this seminar we will read a selection of texts from different genres which tell the stories of marginal subjects: sex workers, thieves and pirates. We will examine these texts as literary and material artefacts, and place them in their cultural and historical context. Why were eighteenth-century readers attracted to characters whose lives were lived outside of mainstream society, characters whose lives and deeds were often regarded as criminal and transgressive?
