This course examines the idea of Europe over the long twentieth century through an approach combining history and political science. It first analyses how early international organizations functioned as laboratories for new forms of cooperation and integration, thereby illuminating conceptualizations of Europe that long predate the emergence of the European Communities. The course then turns to the concrete beginnings of European integration before addressing Europe’s evolving place in the world and the global entanglements that have shaped its political, economic, and institutional development.
