Composition (Academic and Critical Writing Skills) is designed to teach students the following techniques and strategies for clear and effective communication in academic discourse: active reading of short literary and nonliterary texts; synthesizing information and evaluating sources; composing coherent essays that are organized around a main idea, formulated in clear and idiomatic prose, and supported by properly integrated quotations of primary and secondary sources; the mechanics of punctuation; style and register; rereading, revising, and editing; constructive peer-reviewing; formatting; and creating lists of works cited.
Students will acquire and hone these skills through regular reading and writing assignments.
